Medical Education System in Singapore
National University of Singapore (NUS) offers a 5-year undergraduate medical programme.

The General Medicine course runs from the 3rd to the 5th year. It consists of didactic lectures, tutorials, and clinical clerkships, during which students will acquire skills in history taking, physical examination and in reaching an appropriate clinical diagnosis through appropriate investigations. They will learn about and understand common medical diseases and their management. They will also gain familiarity with the commonly used medical drugs and their side effects.

In the 3rd year, the students will spend 8 weeks doing a clinical clerkship in a medical unit. The 3rd and 4th year clerkships include Medicine electives for students to pursue in-depth study or revision in areas of their choice. For the Final year, students will again be posted to a medical unit to pursue a clinical clerkship for 12 weeks (including 2 weeks for dermatology & sexually transmitted disease medicine and one week each for geriatrics and infectious disease medicine). They will also function as a junior houseman under the Student Internship Programme for 4 weeks.

At the end of each posting, the students will be evaluated on daily performance, case analysis, MCQ's and a clinical test. This assessment contributes to the final mark at the Final Professional Examination in Medicine.

Internal Medicine - Removal of Pre-BST Accreditation
With effect from 1 November 2005, the Specialist Training Committee (Internal Medicine) will not allow pre-BST accreditation for all Internal Medicine basic trainees. This was proposed to ensure that a Basic trainee acquires competency in his knowledge and clinical experience in Internal Medicine.

For existing trainees who started their traineeship before Nov 2005, you have been advised to submit your pre-BST accreditation request by end Oct 2005. After which, pre-BST accreditation requests will not be entertained.
